I love Quantas.
But first let me bring you all up to speed on this, the first of my posts where my blushing bride is sitting next to me, awake, lost in her own giggling and grunting web-surfing. She really gets into it!
When we had left off, Steph was unconscious, and I was getting ready for Friday. We had just finished the big bridge climb.
Friday we rose, hit the lounge for breaky and headed out. We went exploring toward Darling Harbour. We stopped in at a very cool Virgin Megastore and listened to the music on the sampler headphones. Steph bought some crazy CD. I bought a single from a guy we saw on the "Rage 100" countdown on TV. The guy is obviously channelling Michael Jackson, and he is sampling Beethoven's 5th. It is a very neat song, and the video is funny too. his name is Thicke. I'll loan you the CD when I bring it home.
We saw Martin Place and the great shops along Market St and King St in Sydney. Lots of great shopping and dining. We made it to Darling Harbour and saw the Aussie Maritime Museum and Sydney Aquarium. We lunched at a local pub - this is one of my favourite things to do when travelling - get away from all the tourist traps, and eat good meals for cheap. We had the A$6 lunch special with a Toohey's New draft beer. Excellent.
We returned to the hotel, sat in the hot tub to rest our tired feet, took a very short 30min nap, and then prepared for Eugene Onegin, the opera by Tchkovski (yeah, I can't spell it). The concierge recommended Aria, the restaurant overlooking the opera house. We weren't going to go, but after seeing how reasonable to the menu was, we went for it. After dinner and drinks, we walked right up into the opera house. Steph got us great seats, with plenty of legroom.
The opera was way better than I expected. It's the story of Eugene, a guy who is hanging with one of his boyz, who gets dragged along to meet his main man's fiancee. The fiancee's sister falls in love with him, and sends a love note to him after he leaves. Eugene returns, and smacks down her aspiring love with all the gentleness of a Sammy Sosa home run shot. He basically tells her that 1) he is too cool for her 2) she is a weird farmer girl 3) he is a major player, and would be no good at marriage. She's crushed. Time passes. He's at a party with the same folks in the following winter, and word of his dis (disrespect) has spread, so he's welcome, but uncomfortable. He decides to flirt with the engaged sister, the girl engaged to his best friend. The fiance (his boy) gets mad, a challenge is issued, and Eugene kills his best friend in the duel with pistols the next morning.
Yeas pass, Eugene is 26 now, and unmarried. He finds himself invited to a party at his cousin's house. He sees the girl who was pining for him now married to the host prince. They meet, now she is hot and he wants her. You know the rest. He sends her a letter, she reads it, they talk, she turns him down faster than a Bill Clinton turns down Hilary, and he is crushed. It's a tragedy, game over.
We got up the next day, stressed about travel, got to the airport, through security and on the Quantas economy seats with no hassles at all. The legroom was heavenly. The flight was great; we had a meal, free headsets, coffee, iced water, and a selection of 10 music channels, with a show being played on the big screen in the front of coach. Amazing flight on the Boeing 767-338. It was comfortable and pleasant, the crew was great. They even showed the map thing that I like, which shows the local area and plane's speed, altitude, etc.
We landed in Cairnes (pronounced Cans) and took the shuttle to our hotel. We love Port Douglas, but more on that tomorrow.
